Description

Delicious, homemade Bolognese sauce that cooks all day to taste just like Grandma's. This sauce recipe makes enough for two pounds of pasta. Typically, I cook one pound and use half the sauce and freeze the rest for the next time.

Instructions

Sauce
  • Dice carrots, onion, and celery.
  • Heat olive oil on medium high heat in a large pot.
  • Add onions, carrots, and celery and sauté until tender and slightly browned.
  • Add garlic and sauté gently for 30 seconds.
  • Remove vegetables from the pot and set aside.
  • Add ground beef to the pot and season with salt and pepper.
  • Cook until browned.
  • Drain grease from the cooked ground beef.
  • Return beef and vegetables to the pot and season with salt and pepper.
  • Turn the burner temperature down to medium.
  • Add tomato paste to the pot and mix well.
  • Let the tomato paste cook for a couple of minutes, adjusting the temperature so the paste doesn't burn.
  • Add 12 oz of water and mix well.
  • Stir in both cans of tomato sauce, 15 oz of water, and canned mushrooms.
  • Bring sauce to a boil and then lower heat to simmer.
  • Add Italian Seasoning and sugar and season with additional salt and pepper to taste.
  • Let the sauce simmer for at least four hours, adding water as needed to keep the sauce from getting too thick.
  • Adjust seasonings as needed along the way.

Pasta
  • Bring salted water to a boil in a large pot.
  • Add 1 lb of pasta and cook as instructed on the package to al dente.
  • Drain water and return pasta to the pot.
  • Top the pasta with about half the sauce and combine.
  • Serve with freshly grated parmesan cheese.

Additional sauce can be frozen for next time!
